Many of us never realize what a completely unique and special individual we are. Throughout all of human history, there has never before existed a person with your exact confluence of genetics and physiology. Just as no two snowflakes, grains of sand or blades of grass in this world are the same, there is, and always will be, only one you.
And each of us is completely individual.
For this reason, our needs are all completely different. There will never be a definitive list of what could be labeled good and bad foods. Each of us will react differently to different elements in our environments.
There is one commonality, one trend that I am seeing again and again, one alarmingly common theme has sprung up across the board for many individuals. We are living in the age of inflammation. Chronic diseases are on the rise. The leading cause of death worldwide is cardiovascular disease, followed by cancer. More and more people (especially women) are struggling to navigate autoimmune disease. There is a rise in obesity, depression, and unrelenting fatigue. And all of these diseases have one common thread – inflammation.
What is modern medicine’s answer to all of this?
Drugs.
A whopping 81% of Americans are on a prescription medication. Many are on two or more.
That’s okay, because we are at a period in time when there is a staggering amount of drugs to treat (effectively) an array of symptoms. It’s amazing what a difference such a small capsule or tablet can have open the entire physical body. Pills save lives. However, they are a tool, a stabilizer, a wake-up call. There are not the long-term solution.
You have another choice – separate from a regime of pills or a life of chronic suffering. A path of self-discovery and self-empowerment.
The foods that we eat, our lifestyle habits and our mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual states all affect our health profoundly. Finding your own specific and individual path is one answer.
Some people thrive in activity and a busy schedule while others are their best with plenty of quiet, meditative moments. Most of us need a balance of both throughout each day. Vigorous exercise can invigorate some and cause pain and exhaustion for others. Some individuals are so successful on one type of diet, while others feel worse on it. Learning to listen to your own body, to interpret it’s signals and to respond accordingly is empowering and liberating. Knowing yourself.
Starting out on the path of knowing yourself can be intimidating. It’s uncomfortable to make changes. There is so much information out there that it can be hard to sift through. Getting in touch with your inner voice requires patience, stillness and trust. A wellness coach can be a guide, mentor and teacher on this path. Someone who can help you to navigate through the sea of possibilities, to become more familiar with yourself. Wellness coaching can complementary to modern medicine and yet freeing at the same time.
You take the damn pills and start to make small changes, and then one day you realize that you don’t need the pills anymore. You’re back – in balance, fortified and resilient. That’s the ultimate goal of wellness.
