Before You Keto


I should start with full disclosure: I am personally not a fan of the ketogenic diet.  Because it is a mode of starvation, when your body it in a state of ketosis it desperately uses fat stores to avoid eating away at protein in muscles and organs. But when the body doesn’t have enough resources to undergo ketosis, the results can be disastrous.  That is why it may theoretically work well for weight loss, but I feel is dangerous for those already at a normal weight or even underweight who have body issues.


It can be extremely challenging to stick to a diet that maintains ketosis in the body.  Eating out is nearly impossible.  Finding ways to get enough fat  into your body isn’t so hard, but adding enough actual bulk to allow you to eliminate in a healthy way is another issue.


Successful ketosis is a milder form of ketoacidosis.  Ketoacidosis most commonly affects people who have type 1 diabetes. It is the leading cause of death of people with diabetes who are under 24 years of age.  So the ketogenic diet is definitely  not safe for those diagnosed with diabetes.

Another issue is the ketosis is usually only effective over a short term period of time.  Once your body is in a state of ketosis you also begin to lose muscle and can become very fatigued.  You will eventually enter starvation mode. Then it actually becomes even harder to lose weight.  It is also nearly impossible to build muscle.

I believe the keto fad is the result of our obsession with weight and having control over our body.  It is more healthy to keep food in perspective. Food is a diverse, fun, and amazing gift.   Food is a how nourish ourselves and stay well.  A balanced diet is an omnivorous diet that includes plenty of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and quality proteins to build tissues and maintain health in the body.
