This is my favorite smoothie to drink pre-yoga practice. The delicious purple hue just fills me with serenity. And it’s light enough that I can start stretching and doing my asanas soon after.
You might imagine that lavender would taste a little ridiculous in a smoothie. But the flavor of this drink is subtle and sophisticated. The mulberries, which I keep on hand as a pantry staple, have a vanilla-cake-like flavor. They are also great for the skin, rich in vitamin C, protein, iron and calcium. In fact, for a fruit, they contain 4 grams of protein per serving, which makes them a great pre or post workout food.

The color does not come from the lavender, but rather from maqui berry powder, another great smoothie ingredient to keep on hand. It is similar to acai, full of antioxidant-boosting anthocyanins. It can reduce inflammation and aid in blood sugar balance.
Lavender may not add the beautiful color, but it does lend an intriguing flavor and many benefits. It is soothing to the nervous system and several studies suggest that lavender has mood stabilizing, sedative, analgesic and neuroprotective properties. Use the freshest, highest quality lavender you can find. Fresh from your own garden would be ideal!
